Character Design process

Some sketches that illustrate my process for character design.  I don't think it is normal to go through so many iterations of a character, but alas, the client's ideas kept on changing.  The ideation is entirely mine, but the 3D model is done my someone else with some input by myself.

What Remains

A painting by Wayne Barlowe called What Remains.  Given out as small cards this past weekend at the Gnomon workshop, Mr. Barlowe was kind enough to sign it for me.

The Dancer and the Herald

An old digital painting that I've resurrected now that I feel I can handle it with some decent skill.  It is greatly influenced by French Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau's painting "Salome dancing before Herod", an amazing piece of art that I saw at the UCLA Armand Hammer museum a while back and has made quite an impression upon me.

Odd Nerdrum

Just found out about this artist and his very interesting work.  His work is very emotionally charged and often hard to look at, yet beautiful at the same time...

Early Little Red Riding Hood stuff...

Back when I thought I'd work on an epic-scale story.  I still like some of this stuff and will probably reuse them in the future.

Jazz Man

Another painting from last semesters Intro to Figure Painting class, this time a Jazz musician.  It is a composite of 2 separate images, the figure being from a Jazz club in Los Angeles, CA's Chinatown, and the background being from a pool hall in Long Beach, CA.

Afghani Sheep Herder

An oil painting of an anonymous Afghani sheep herder for my Intro. to Figure Painting class.  It is a copy from a photograph in Steve McCurry's book, "Looking East", a book I recommend for it's beautiful and exotic portraiture.  I'm somewhat pleased by this painting though it's appeal is mainly attributed to the quality of the source photograph.  Hopefully I'll get oil painting down with more practice.

The reason for the title...

Not that anybody gives a damn, but "The Inexhaustible Well" is a term borrowed from one of my favorite works of literature, Paul Bowles classic "The Sheltering Sky":

"...we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well.  Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really.  How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it?  Perhaps four or five times.  perhaps not even that.  How many more times will you watch the full moon rise?  Perhaps twenty.  And yet it all seems limitless."

Read the book first, watch the movie after.

Character designs for ConceptArt.org's CHOW contest

Just a few designs, a few months old, for ConceptArt.org's weekly character design contest (CHOW).  The "Skyfishermen" won for that particular week.  I should really get back to it and crank out more of these, but alas, school and work has kept me busy.

Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Space Marines

A few character concepts based on the Chaos Marines of the Warhammer 40K universe.  I should be working on a fourth and last one as there are four Chaos Gods, that being Nurgle.
